Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A gas-producer; a gas-retort; an apparatus for manufacturing gas either by distillation, as in a retort, or by separation, as in a producer, or by a chemical process, as in making hydrogen by mixing zinc and sulphuric acid, thus forming zinc sulphate and liberating hydrogen gas. See gas-producer, 1.
  • noun An apparatus used in chemical laboratories to furnish a particular gas by the action of some liquid reagent upon a solid, so arranged that when the gas is no longer required its outflow may be cut off by a stop-cock, and its tension then serves to force the liquid out of contact with the solid material, thus arresting the generation of gas until it is again needed.
