Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A weight of a substance such that the number of grams taken is equal to its molecular weight or to the sum of the combining weights of the elements of which it is made up. One gram-molecule of water, for example, is 18 grams (H20 =1 + 1 + 16 =18).

  • Following the discovery of the fundamental laws of chemistry, units called, for example, "gram-atom" and "gram-molecule," were used to specify amounts of chemical elements or compounds.

  • Finally, from two obvious equations we derive both the number and the diameter of the molecules which constitute, let us say, a gram-molecule of the gas.

  • For each simple substance the gram-molecule of a compound contains as many gram-atoms as the molecule contains atoms of this simple substance, and the gram-atom is the product of the mass of the atom and Avogadro's number N.

Jean Baptiste Perrin - Nobel Lecture 1965

  • And the gram-molecule (22,412 c.c. in the gaseous state under normal conditions) will contain 22,412 times more molecules: this number will be Avogadro's number.

Jean Baptiste Perrin - Nobel Lecture 1965

  • The number N of the molecules constituting any gram-molecule is Avogadro's number.
