The four-poster bed, along with every piece of furniture in the room, including the panelling, had been polished; the windows had been cleaned; the brass taps on the huge Edwardian bath and basin rubbed to a shine and, finally, the bed made up with linen sheets, blankets and a traditional handembroidered bedspread.
