  • In ancient music, theorists who reached harmonic rules by induction from subjective aural effects, as opposed to canonici, or those who deduced rules from a mathematical theory of intervals. Also called harmonists, and, from their leader (Aristoxenus, a Greek peripatetic philosopher, a disciple of Aristotle), Aristoxenians.
