- n. Plural form of heteropentamer.

The most common nAChR subtypes in the mammalian brain are α4β2 heteropentamers, which regulate dopamine release from striatal neurons, and α7 homopentamers, which regulate glutamate release and have been implicated in learning and memory.
These novel nAChRs could be distinguished from α7 homopentamers and α4β2 heteropentamers by their unique pharmacological and electrophysiological properties, which were confirmed by heterologous expression in Xenopus oocytes.
Members of the Cys-loop superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels, which mediate fast synaptic transmission in the nervous system, are assembled as heteropentamers from a large repertoire of neuronal subunits.
