Sometimes a pilot's microphone transmit button or switch becomes stuck in the transmit position, preventing reception of, say, ATC instructions to climb or descend or turn to a heading, and which forces everybody else on frequency to eavesdrop on your banal conversation, then increasing confusion and nervous urgency to figure out why you haven't heard from ATC when you should be, nor hearing anybody else either, which is not right, for sure...thereby blocking out everything else on frequency and generally creating a real can of worms until the penny drops and you fix the stuck mike. You'd be surprised how often it happens in a sky filled with millions of flights a week.
