Thus all the hypenated identities, down to the umpteenth generation -- but not so much for Unitedstatesian-Canadians which I could claim legitimately, but my ancestors who came from New England though of themselves mostly as Scots or Germans, I gather -- if pressed, I mention Scots, Irish, German etc. long before U.S. roots.

I could be wrong, but I think that native English speakers will put less of a pause between hyphenated words than non-hypenated words.
