Common PET patterns reported are reduced frontal metabolism (“hypofrontality”) and abnormal cortical and subcortical metabolic relationships in schizophrenics and manics, mild frontal hypofrontality and abnormal basal ganglia metabolism in some depressives, and increased parahippocampal and septohippocampal or basal ganglia metabolism among some patients with anxiety disorder (399, 405, 536).
The large black areas in the scans of Dr. Fallon's brain, labeled "Jim" at far right, indicate very low level of brain activity, called "orbital hypofrontality" in this area.
