From Middle English idelhed ("vanity"), equivalent to idle +‎ -head. Cognate with Scots ydilheid ("idleness"), Dutch ijdelheid ("vanity, vainglory"), Middle Low German idelheit ("idleness"), German Eitelkeit ("vanity, conceit, vainness, idleness"). Compare idlehood.
