From earlier idlehead, from Middle English idelhed ("vanity"), equivalent to idle +‎ -hood. Cognate with Scots ydilheid ("idleness"), Dutch ijdelheid ("vanity"), German Eidelkeit ("vanity, conceit, idleness"). More at idlehead.
