  • There are two possibilities as regards the processes of release and diffusion: either the substances are present in a free and diffusible state in the nerve ending, but the nerve ending when in a state of rest is impermeable and only made permeable to them after stimulation, when they become diffusible and effective, or, the substances in the resting state are in some way combined and indiffusible and only the stimulation releases the combination and thereby makes them diffusible and effective.
