I use it with a small twist: boot only from network gpxe loads from url kernel + initramfs and one network module, httpfs mounts a ripx iso initramfs has only busybox, init, fuse, httpfs, libraries and links to all other files mounted by httpfs, so I have fast boot time and get the rest on demand.

Usage: mkinitrd [OPTION] mkinitrd creates an initial ramdisk (actually an initramfs cpio+gzip archive) used to load kernel modules that are needed to mount the root filesystem, or other modules that might be needed before the root filesystem is available.

Under some circumstances, as explained below, it would be interesting to keep firmware images in non-swappable kernel memory or even in the kernel image (probably within initramfs).
