  • noun linguistics A Japanese word whose kanji spelling preserves the meaning, but not the pronunciation, of the individual kanji characters. For example, "now" (今 ima) and "morning" (朝 asa) combine to form 今朝, meaning "this morning" but pronounced kesa, not ima asa.
