Once on the South Island we made our way to a place called 'kaikoura'.

(Steve had to go easy on the samples here cos he was driving - no such trouble for me!) after a drive (and an afternoon nap for tipsy trish ...) we stopped at The Store - a fabulous restaurant right on the coast, where we had some much needed and amazing fish. really beautiful. we hit the road again to head for kaikoura, with eyes peeled on the coast for wildlife. we weren't disappointed - having thought we'd spotted one seal snoozing on the rocks, we realised that there were actually in the region of 30 seals.

kaikoura is a little coastal town on the eastern coast of south island, north of christchurch. kaikoura is known for all the marine wildlife because of something about canyons and gorges in the ocean nearby that traps plankton or something like that. i don't remember all the reasons, but if you are curious, please ask a marine biologist.
