From Middle English knottil, cnottel ("little knot"), diminutive of Middle English knotte, cnotte ("knot"), equivalent to knot +‎ -le. Cognate with Middle Dutch knuttel, Middle Low German knutel, Middle High German Knüttel ("little stick"). Compare also Old English cnyttels ("string, fiber, sinew").
