Oakland started using him right off the bat to finish games (blowouts at first), he improved dramatically and was the closer by the end of the year i have seen the parnell syndrome in many young pitchers over the years. as a matter of fact, the first one that i recall the mets bringing up was dick selma (ultimately picked off the mets roster by the cubs as i recall) in the mid sixties. his fastball rivaled that of seaver and koosman. but, he never learned to PITCH.

as an example i would offer the koosman situation. when he came up (in '68) he had a better fastball then seaver. then, in '69 or '70 he hurt his arm and was forced to adjust and become more of a PITCHER then a thrower. as you are no doubt aware, he (koosman) went on to win over 200 games.
