  • noun A tall, climbing plant of the gourd family, Ampelosycios scandens, with stems from 50 to 100 feet long and bearing large, fleshy fruits which sometimes reach 60 pounds in weight. It is a native of eastern tropical Africa and is much cultivated by the natives there and in the Mascarene Islands for its large oily seeds, which are boiled and used for food.
