• A family of acanthopterygian fishes represented by the genus Kurtus, to which different limits have been assigned, In Günther's ichthyological system, the only family of the third division of Acanthopterygii (Kurtiformes), embracing both true Kurtidæ and Pempherididæ.
• In late systems, fishes of a compressed oblong form, with a short submedian dorsal fin, a long anal, and an air-bladder lodged within dilated convex ribs forming rings.
