- In Cuvier's ichthyological system, the fourteenth family of acanthopterygian fishes, with oblong and scaly body, a single dorsal supported in front by spines (each of which is generally furnished with membranous appendages), jaws covered with fleshy lips, the lower pharyngeals united, and the intestinal canal with only two very small cæca, or none.
