  • noun A genus of tropical American shrubs, constituting an order by itself, the Lacistemaceæ, having monochlamydeous hermaphrodite flowers in slender spikes which are sessile and usually fascicled in the axils of the alternate, shortpetioled, entire leaves. Sixteen species have been described, ranging from Mexico and the West Indies to Brazil and Peru.
