- n. A small tree-frog of the genus Hylodes, peculiar to tropical America. The most common species, H. martinicensis, is noteworthy from the fact that it was the first known instance of a frog the metamorphosis of which took place within the egg.

The Germans call them _laub-frosch, _ or leaf-frog; they are most difficult things to find, on account of their color so much resembling the leaves on which they live.
