  • Dear Virginia,

This holiday is sketch. Please call it Martin Luther King Jr. Day like the other 49 states.

    Love,

  • Dear jennarenn,

You're right. But we had Lee and Jackson Day long before the other 49 states had Martin Luther King Day.

    Love,

    Virginia

(I'm just trying to be cute by echoing your formatting. I wasn't being snarky! I think it's a dumb holiday too.)

Actually my favorite comment regarding this holiday was an anonymous comment in a local newspaper (our local newspaper sucks so the best part of it is a two-page rant by anonymous citizens about anything under the sun) that said, essentially, "Why do we have Lee, Jackson, King day? I can see how Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King were important, but why does Jesse Jackson get to have his own day?"

I haven't ever really stopped laughing at that. The thought that someone would look right past the *enormous* irony of having the same day celebrate Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King, to rush into such a bizarre assumption.

(p.s. the "Jackson" is Stonewall Jackson.)
