Some of them have free trials you might test some out to see if they meet your needs dvdlab's companion editor/encoder. mainconcept based encoder like vegas/premiere pro cce is probably out, as you'd want sp2 - $1950 - for the multipass vbr that is cce's forte. highest quality if used properly. tmpgenc isn't any better than it was 10 years ago. not that it's bad, usually gives decent results, but very slow.

I know exactly what you're talking about, historically the oversmoothing was the biggest issue of the older x264 builds and that still plagues other h264 encoders (like mainconcept).

You may potentially have to demux what mainconcept produces to get the video only steam out, but since I have never used it I cannnot say this with any certainty.
