John takes out the mapbook and checks for spacing, and then we begin to measure: the first nine flags leading away from the street are placed exactly twelve inches apart, but the space between flags number nine and ten is fifteen inches apart.

This matches exactly with the original spacing of the yellow flags, at least according to the mapbook.

Pemex used to make a mapbook (the BEST IMHO) laid out in grid form, including topo lines, unfortunately it has been out of print, try asking at used bookstores in D.F. The new GuiaRojo is a larger cumbersome oversized book (boo!) now laid out by state, ala Rand McNally (another BIG BOO!) which means the larger states are rendered rather smaller.
