There were, in the lowlands, the massasaugas; short, sluggish rattle-snakes, venomous but cowardly, and, finally, there were the black-snakes ranging everywhere, for no respecter of locality is _bascanion constrictor_ when in pursuit of prey.
Biologist already knew the population had reached critically low numbers, and it is possible these two snakes -- which some zoo staff refer to as Adam and Eve -- are the last remaining eastern massasaugas in northeastern Illinois.
