  • The Mau Mau were a militant African nationalist movement active in Kenya during the 1950s whose main aim was to remove British rule and European settlers from the country.

Also, the Mau Maus were a particularly violent Puerto Rican street gang in Brooklyn during the 1950s. The film, The Cross and the Switchblade covered the origins of its most famous leader, Nicky Cruz.

Regrettably, this noun was verbed at a very early stage by Tom Wolfe in the title essay of his book "Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers".
