When asked how to prevent the problem I am told by the att / mcaffee rep that I should "reformat my computer" when I ask how that will prevent the problem since he just told me the virus was not on my computer or Mcaffee would have detected he went into some long winded convoluted explanation and hung up on me.

Any suggestions or experiences? the first thing wrong with that statement was that you mentioned norton and mcaffee .... utter garbage, i'd use AVG Free before i used those ... if you can find a copy of Nod32 you will be better off. dont forget to make sure you have all updates, as well as windows defender, windows malicious software remover, spybot, rogue remover, and cleanup.
