John Barbour, an archdeacon of St. Machar’s Church in Scotland, was the first to use it, in his epic poem, The Actes and Life of the Most Victorious Conqueror, Robert Bruce King of Scotland, written in the mid-1300s: “The King had in custom ay, / For to riss airly eurilk day, / And pas weill fer fra his menze, / Quhen he vald pas to the preve.”
