First, the background. The Honourable Terry McCarthy was at one time Minister for Local Government during the reign of the CLP in the Northern Territory (of Australia). During the 1990's he made an official visit to Indonesia and had a series of high-level meetings with Indonesian politicians. Bear in mind i) the Indonesian word for thank you is terima kasih and ii) as Indonesian is hardly a global language, public figures in Indonesia expect that no visitors will speak their language, or, if they attempt it, will mangle it badly.
Hence the following exchange is reported to have taken place in Bali I am told. Governor of Bali: Hello. I am very pleased to meet you. (extends hand) TM: (shaking hand) Terry McCarthy. Governor: You're welcome.
After this trip I several times heard Terry McCarthy referred to with wink and giggle as Mister Thank-You.
