A combination of the Munter hitch (sometimes known as the Italian hitch), and the mule knot. The hitch allows controlled descent when rappelling (abseiling). The climbing rope passes through a locking carabiner, around the rope, and back through the carabiner. The addition of the mule to the Munter hitch belays the Munter when required. For controlled descent, one only needs to apply relatively little force on the free end using the brake hand.
