The region is an Endemic Bird Area with, on the coast, jackass penguin Spheniscus demersens, blue crane Anthropoides paradiseus, Cape vulture Gyps coprotheres, black eagle Aquila verreauxii, martial eagle Polemaetus bellicosus, fish eagle Haliaeetus vocifer, black harrier Circus maurus, lanner falcon Falco biarmicus and lesser kestrel Falco naumanni.

The lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni), also listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, may breed locally in steppe areas.

Some 13 of these are listed including lesser kestrel Falco naumanni (VU), Chinese grouse Bonasa sewerzovi (VU), Chinese monal Lophophorus lhuysii (VU), blue-eared pheasant Crossoptilon auritum, Sichuan jay Perisoreus imternigrans (VU), snowy-cheeked laughingthrush Garrulax sukatschewi (VU), rufus-headed robin Luscinia ruficeps (VU) and a subspecies of Tengmalm's owl Aegolius funereus beickianus which is endemic to the region.
