  • noun One of a ship's officers whose special duty it is to care for the chronometers, compasses, charts, etc., to measure altitudes and take the bearings of the heavenly bodies from which to calculate latitude, longitude, and the deviation of the compass, and to lay out the vessel's course, etc.,—all, however, under authority of the captain.
