Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A gate or obstruction formed by placing long, slender bars, or ‘needles,’ side by side vertically in a suitable frame. The needles, since they are relatively small, can be quickly placed in the swiftly flowing water and the current checked without shock, or without the use of an expensive and heavy mechanism.
