From Middle English nesen, from Old English *hnēosan ("to sneeze"), from Proto-Germanic *hneusanan (“to sneeze”), from Proto-Indo-European *pneu- (“to gasp, pant, breathe”). Cognate with Dutch niezen ("to sneeze"), German niesen ("to sneeze"), Danish nyse ("to sneeze"), Swedish nysa ("to sneeze"), Icelandic hnjósa ("to sneeze"), Old English fnēosan ("to sneeze").
