- noun In organic chemistry, a class-name of compounds which contain the group RC(ONO2).C(R):NOH, where R is a hydrocarbon radical such as methyl, CH3. They are formed by the addition of nitrogen tetroxid to aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons of the ethylene series.
