The practice of overdyeing or overprinting to achieve different colors or shades was typical for textile coloring.
Also, on t-shirts, after overdyeing them, I was thinking of just sewing some stretched elastic along the shoulder seam, to do quick gathers, and wondered if you'd tried that.
Some involves complicated stitching, dyeing and overdyeing, or removing dye from the fiber and then overdyeing, some is wrapped around a pole, pleated and tied, then dyed several times - know as "arashi", and there are many, many other techniques only a few of which are seen here.
I have some thoughts of lightly overdyeing the edges and center with brown, subtly; we'll see.
