• In Blumen bach's classification, a singular association of web-footed carnivores, edenatates, rodents, sirenians, and monotremes in one order, the eighth. Thus it contained seals and walruses, otters, beavers, manatees and dugongs, and the ornithorhynchus.
• In Illiger's classification (1811), a family of his prenisculantia, containing the web-footed rodents only, as certain water-rats (Hydromys)and the beaver.
