Yet, as a historian of medicine, I groan at these "pathographies" of famous historical figures written by modern-day clinicians, and as a disability studies scholar recognize that this type of compensatory history is hardly representative of the experiences of disabled persons throughout history.
While I admire Jamison’s skills as a clinician and her courage in sharing her first-hand experience with bipolar disorder, as a historian I just have to groan at these “pathographies” or retrospective diagnoses of historical figures.
