  • A family of small wading and swimming birds of the order Limicolæ, related to the Scolopacidæ, or snipe family, having the toes lobate and the body depressed, with thickened plumage of the under side the phalaropes. There are 3 genera, Phalaropus, Lobipes, and Steganopus. See phalarope.
