Before the First World War (!), the pioneering Italian photochemist Giacomo Ciamician gave an address to the International Congress on Applied Chemistry, in New York, on the prospects of eventually replacing fossil fuels by sunlight-derived fuels (Ciamician, 1912).
As a chemical kineticist and photochemist, I knew that such a molecule could not remain inert in the atmosphere forever, if only because solar photochemistry at high altitudes would break it down.
