To get a better handle on how much energy those photoionized atoms consume, researchers zapped a tiny plastic pellet with 12 laser beams fired simultaneously and allowed some of the resulting radiation to blast a pellet of silicon, a common element in accretion disks.
The thermal pressure of photoionized clumps is higher than the inferred internal pressure of the shocked stellar wind, implying that the current physical conditions have changed significantly over less than a few thousand years.
The team said the x-rays photoionized the silicon, and that interaction mimicked the emissions observed in accretion disks.
Comparison of emission line velocities between the optical HI emission and the ionized UV metal transitions will also be used to constrain the relative extents of the photoionized disk chromosphere and the bulk of the disk in quiescent black hole binaries.
(Right) In the photoionized plasma experiment, a hollow plastic shell is imploded with 12 laser beams, creating a plasma that produces X-rays similar to those near a black hole.
"X-ray spectroscopy of photoionized plasma near a black hole is an important tool to study the evolution of a black hole," Fujioka said.
