- noun A method of determining the geographical longitude of a place on the earth's surface by the astronomical method of lunar distances, in which the distance of the given star from the moon's limb is measured from a photographic plate, made with a telescope as a camera, instead of by direct telescopic measurements, as usually employed in the method of lunar distances.
