  • noun In any toothed wheel or gear, the imaginary surface so located with respect to the axis of the wheel that if the teeth were to disappear, and the wheel to drive by frictional contact with a similar surface on the other wheel, the angular-velocity ratio of the two wheels or shafts would be the same as it is with the teeth in action.
