Last fall, in Spain, when I got bored with comfortable expat living on a primera linea de playa in a 2000-3000 years old pittoresque small Andalusian town of Almunecar, I went to the only European desert, in the province of Almeria, as I wanted to help out a low-tech nonprofit "Sunseed Technology".

I love primitivism: I love remote locations, I love jungles and islands, pittoresque, romantic, but with modern conveniences ... and a reasonable distance to urbane pleasures: great architecture, musea, theatres, Viennese style reading-rooms cafe's etc.etc. (although I can and gladly do without most shops other than bookstores - I am not a shopper), so you can easily switch from one lifestyle to the other.
