In a steam-engine, a cover-plate; a plate on the back of a slide-valve designed to relieve the pressure of the valve on the seat; a balance-plate designed to receive the pressure of the steam against a fixed abutment, so that such pressure does not reach the sliding valve and force it against its seat.
