  • noun In steam and pneumatic engineering, a stay used to strengthen tubes, water-spaces in steam-boilers, or large tubes and annular spaces in air-tanks, and resist pressure tending to collapse or rupture alter the manner of a strut, instead of acting by tensile strength after the manner of a tie-rod.
