  • noun An extensive genus of Old World thrush-like passerine birds, typical of the subfamily Pycnonotinæ or family Pycnonotidæ. It contains about fifty kinds of bulbuls, ranging from Persia and Palestine to South Africa. Also spelled Picnonotus. See cut in preceding column.
