  • noun A red, or yellowish-red, crystalline substance, C6H4(CO)2C6H2(OH)2 or 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone, made by heating together phthalic anhydrid and hydroquinone; also in other ways. It gives blue solutions with alkalis. It melts at 192–193° C.
