  • noun In mining, a shaft constructed for sending down rock for filling stopes which have been worked out. It is usually provided with a valve or trap at the bottom so that rock may be thrown into it at any time and taken out as it is wanted.
  • noun In steam-engines, a shaft that oscillates or rocks on its journals instead of revolving; specifically, a vibrating shaft with levers which works the slide-valves of some engines.
