  • a.k.a. (and more commonly) run the gauntlet. "A kind of punishment used in the army, in case of considerable offences. When a soldier is to run the gauntlet, the regiment is drawn up at open order, and faced inwards; each soldier has a switch and lashes the offender as he runs along naked through the lines. While he runs, the drum beats at both ends of the ranks. Sometimes the fellow has to run through 5 or 6 times, and the major rides along and sees that each soldier strikes him as he passes."
